2011 Ford Mustang V-6

2011 Ford Mustang V-6

2011 Ford Mustang V-6
We've been planning to bring you word on the 2011 Ford Mustang in a few weeks, when the 2010 Detroit auto show kicks off.

We can't wait--because Facebook and Twitter can't wait, from what we can see. The juicy details on the '11 'Stang have broken through the lacy filigree of a news "embargo," so here's what we know.

The 2011 Ford Mustang returns to the hallmark V-8 displacement of the recent past. Yep, in shorthand, the 5.0 Mustang is back. Vanilla Ice be praised, it'll turn in 412 horsepower--only 14 hp or so less than the Chevrolet Camaro SS. (Yes, that's a V-6 'Tang you see above--we're sticking with the photography embargo until someone else commits mortal sin.)

Those are the details divulged so far, but who knows? Maybe Twitter will cough up more embargoed information before the week is done. Stay tuned--and come back for our 2010 Detroit Auto Show preview on Friday.

Seat IBZ Concept shown at Frankfurt

Seat IBZ Concept

Check out this little gem from the Frankfurt show. This is the Seat IBZ Concept, based on the company’s Ibiza platform. If there’s a more funky mid-size family friendly wagon on the market I am yet to see it.

The side profile shows a number of crazy and sharp angles that would normally set me off on a machete waving course of negativity. But, somehow, Seat Design Director Luc Donckerwolke has made this work. And work beautifully at that.

Okay, the car itself doesn’t appear to be anything special. There’s not even any mention of engine specs in the release below. It’s just a great reminder of why we like cars. Because, sometimes, they just look superb!

Bravo Seat, it might be “just a wagon”, but I love it! The production version of the IBZ is scheduled to go on sale in Europe around the middle of next year. Such a shame we won’t ever see this car in Australia.

More after the jump.

FAMILY-SIZED SEAT IBIZA CONCEPT IBZ WOWS FRANKFURT

  • Family-friendly shape points to forthcoming third member of the Ibiza range
  • Sharp, dynamic exterior is combined with functional, stylish interior
  • Sporty Spanish brand continues ambitious design innovation

SEAT is showcasing the stunning IBZ Concept at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The star of the SEAT stand in Germany previews a new, family-sized version of the Ibiza that will make its debut in showrooms across Europe towards the middle of next year.

Boasting a modern, tensioned silhouette, the concept car making its world debut at the IAA includes numerous distinctive exterior and interior design features, and benefits from cutting-edge technology for a gripping driving experience.

Once again, SEAT Design Director Luc Donckerwolke has applied his pragmatic vision to create an attractive yet functional car where comfort and roominess complement the traditional sports philosophy common to all SEATs.

The world debut of the bold IBZ Concept is another significant step on the company’s path to extending its range line-up. The challenge it meets is to combine a larger, family-sized chassis featuring greater load capacity with the distinct, feisty personality of the Ibiza.

Imposing front view

The nose of the concept car shows an elegant evolution of SEAT’s now trademark Arrow Design. The bonnet features a new ‘running edge’, splitting the car through its longitudinal axis, adding precision and sharpness to the familiar Ibiza face. Taut ‘eyebrows’ accentuate the headlights, whose diamond-shaped interior combines LED technology with light guides.

The new centre grille, with honeycomb slats and aluminium surround, is underlined by the same purist, rectangular air vents found on the Ibiza Cupra. Another development at the front sees the usual arrow shape enhanced by a set of lines parallel to the headlights, finishing at the broad opening beneath the bumper. Two aluminium mouldings in this area round off the front end design.

Very clearly styled to stand out, the IBZ Concept boasts an attractive sweep created by the newly-designed headlights, complete with LED technology. Their pointed tips provide continuity to the Dynamic Line that brushes over the wings and the middle of the front doors, while their novel interior structure mimics the facets of a diamond. One set generates the main beam, while the smaller LEDs generate the dipped beam. At the same time, a portion of the smaller facets at the top of the cluster serve as daytime driving lights, with the indicator LEDs at the bottom.

The exterior design of SEAT’s prototype is enhanced by its high gloss, eye-catching blue paint colour while a broad panoramic sunroof floods the interior with light.

The LED indicator lights literally stand out, as they are built into the new streamlined door mirrors – each one mounted onto its door with a pair of arms. The exterior arm which supports the mirror, and the mirror’s outer casing are both aluminium to match the other trim elements found on the car.

A side view reveals low profile 235/35 tyres on attractive, five double-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels, each with an embossed ‘S’ at the hub. Another tell-tale SEAT feature of the IBZ Concept are the Leon-inspired rear passenger door handles, which are neatly integrated into the third side windows.

The attention-grabbing new hatch naturally bears the SEAT logo and when the rear hatch is open, its structure has a very low load floor that sits flush with the number plate. Meanwhile, the broad rear window provides great visibility. An elegant, high-mount roof spoiler houses the third brake light – underlining the car’s sporting intent.

As usual, the SEAT logo doubles as the boot handle mechanism and the prototype is easily identified by the ‘IBZ’ initials beneath the logo in the centre of the hatch.

The crisp rear section of the IBZ Concept is further enhanced by the addition of defined ‘shoulders’ that house the light clusters. As with the striking headlights, they feature LED technology on a raised surface. From bottom to top, the LEDs create the sidelights, brake, reverse and indicator lights.

The final highlights rounding off the view of the rear are a new bumper, which has a built-in number plate, a number plate light at the bottom of the hatch and split twin tailpipes, which each boast a stylish aluminium bezel.

Where space and style combine

The passenger compartment of the SEAT Ibiza IBZ Concept offers space and style in equal measure, with fine detailing and functional innovations throughout.

The interior is structured by ‘light guide’ strips that run through the dashboard and the doors, integrating the radio/iPhone interface screen and providing atmospheric lighting at the same time.

The light, airy tones of the cream coloured ‘Magnolia’ interior heighten the feeling of space inside this SEAT. The dashboard features the same colour, and a different texture is provided via the suede-clad soft pads. The instrument binnacle hood, door panels, pillars and ceiling are also finished in suede.

The newly-designed seats and integrated headrests are upholstered with a combination of leather and suede in the same colour as the dashboard, with blue stitching to match the body colour.

In trademark sporty SEAT style, the steering wheel on the IBZ Concept is slightly flattened at the base. It is wrapped in leather and suede and has a four-spoke structure with dipped side grips, the SEAT ‘S’ in the centre and the letters ‘IBZ’ on the lower spoke, and a set of newly designed multi-functional controls on either side.

Naturally, the sporty design of the instrument panel is faithful to the brand’s identity. The large dial on the left is the rev counter, with a screen taking up the rest of the space. On the right is an analogue and digital speed display, with the navigation information, trip computer and remaining vehicle controls shown in the middle.

There are four circular air vents on the dashboard encased in aluminium. A special interior design concept features a striking combination of aluminium layered with a glossy black material that make up a line with recessed lighting extending across the dashboard and continuing onto the door panels. The centre houses a screen displaying radio and iPhone functions, and the centre console has a purpose-built iPhone slot.

The centre console also features a stylish climate control system with all the usual functions; the gear stick with a leather gaiter and a panel with buttons to activate the hazard lights, door locks and seat heaters, as well as several storage compartments. Close by is an electronic hand-brake and the central armrest, which is cloth upholstered with a handy storage compartment that can also be removed from the vehicle.

The newly designed door panels on the IBZ Concept echo the style of the dashboard, with the soft pad in suede and an aluminium insert beneath the armrest. The aluminium door handles and speaker frames are also new – the latter with a unique arrangement of square slats.

Predictably perhaps, beneath the rear hatch of the new SEAT Ibiza IBZ Concept lies a spacious boot. Measuring an impressive 410 litres, it can be significantly extended when the rear seats are folded to leave a completely flat cargo space that stretches right to the back of the front seats.

The boot’s low load height makes it easy to access, allowing heavy or bulky items to be loaded more simply. It also provides several solutions for keeping objects securely in place such as side hooks or storage nets on either side of the wheel arches.

There’s also a supplementary storage compartment beneath the folding boot floor. A cover leads to the spare wheel and tool box.

The detailing in the boot once again shows SEAT’s quality workmanship in practice. The edges of the floor covering are finished with leather, and the soft pads on the side are in cream-coloured suede.

Third member of the Ibiza family

With the unveiling of the stylish Ibiza Concept IBZ at Frankfurt Motor Show, SEAT is offering a preview of the future family-sized version of its most popular model. The production version is expected to arrive in showrooms across Europe next year as the company continues its new product offensive which is making the Spanish brand’s range the youngest on the market.

In the year of the Ibiza’s 25th anniversary, the newest addition to the range underlines the car’s segment-leading quality, design and workmanship.

The chassis of the new IBZ Concept has the same compact dimensions as an Ibiza hatch, with a total length of 4.22 metres and the same height and width. However, access to the rear seats is improved still further via broader rear doors.

As with the rest of the SEAT range the sporty, design-driven youthful style of the new Ibiza IBZ Concept make it perfect for those who value space, practicality, comfort and driving enjoyment.

Citroen DS Revolte released

Citroen DS Revolte

Citroen DS Revolte

Citroen DS Revolte

What we have here is a full photo gallery showing the latest creation of the French automaker Citroen. After showing a couple of teaser images, Citroen finally decided it was time to show more of its new project. From what it seems, the new Citroen concept car is named Citroen DS Revolte. We can also see that the logo on the bonnet that suggests that the concept will be part of the new DS range of models recently revived by the French automaker Citroen. From what we know until now, the only model that was confirmed by Citroen as being a part of the DS range is the Citroen DS3 super mini. Unfortunately we do not have any other official information. Still, from the pictures we can see a DS3 sub model that is clearly inspired from the iconic Citroen 2CV.

The Citroen DS Revolte has a more aggressive and athletic design, even though we can clearly see a lot of Citroen 2CV styling patterns and angles including the curvy front and rear ends, the fabric top that covers the whole length of the roof amongst other common patterns. Other important features include the so called ``suicide doors`` at the rear and the extremely futuristic (and impossible to recreate in production form) interior with a dashboard that looks inspired from an alien spaceship. I am sure that we will get more information regarding the Citroen DS Revolte very soon.

The Citroen DS Revolte looks very good, but it is more than certain that we will never see the concept car in a production form, at least not without being heavily modified. The interior of the car is extremely futuristic and so is the exterior of the car. At this moment, it is impossible to think that the French automaker Citroen will actually bring this car to the market looking like this.

Lexus finally reveales the LF-Ch

The Japanese automaker Lexus has released the initial details and official images of the LF-Ch premium concept compact hatchback. Apparently Lexus has decided it is time to enter the premium compact hatchback segment. Thus, the Lexus LF-Ch concept will be a starting point for a direct contender of cars like the Audi A3 or the BMW 1-Series . The press release of the Japanese automaker Lexus includes mostly details regarding the interior and exterior styling of the Lexus LF-Ch compact hatchback.

One of the most important things mentioned in the press release is the exterior dimensions of the car. More precisely, the Lexus LF-Ch premium compact hatchback concept has a wheelbase of 2600 millimeters, an overall length of 4300 millimeters, a height of 1400 millimeters and a width of 1790 millimeters. In comparison, having a wheelbase of 2578 millimeters, a length of 4292 millimeters, a height of 1423 millimeters and a width of 1765 millimeters, the Audi A3 is quite similar to the Lexus LF-Ch.

The Japanese automaker Lexus did not disclose any other details regarding the powertrain, or anything else, but they did mention that the LF-Ch has a full hybrid drivetrain that allows the Lexus LF-Ch to be driven in a fully electric mode, without using any conventional fuel.

A prepared statement of the Japanese automaker Lexus said that ``The LF-Ch concept reaffirms Lexus`s commitment to Europe, combining compact dimensions, stylish five door, full hybrid technology and low emissions to satisfy the most demanding customer requirements and to appeal to a new, younger generation of customers``.

The Japanese automaker will probably launch a production version of the LF-Ch premium compact hatchback towards the end of the next year. Until then, we have to wait for the Frankfurt Auto Show to open its gates so that we can get more details.

Audi RS3 debut confirmed on twitter

Audi RS3 tweet by Audi Cape Town

Has Audi Cape Town let the RS3 cat out of the bag? The above entry on twitter would seem to indicate, yes, it has!

While speculation has been around for some time that Audi would be fitting the 2.5 litre inline 5 cylinder into the A3 platform to make an RS3 model, nothing has been officially announced.

Interestingly, assuming the above info is on the money, the RS3 has been detuned by 5bhp to be down on the 340bhp produced by the TT RS.

There’s a spyshot after the jump showing was is understood to be an RS3 test mule in testing at the Nürburgring in March this year. For more, check out WorldCarFans.

Lexus LF-Ch Concept revealed

Lexus LF-Ch Concept Hybrid

Lexus LF-Ch Concept Hybrid

Following the official, and not so official, leaks of information Lexus has finally revealed a set of images showing its LF-Ch Concept Hybrid in full. This is the car Lexus hopes will eat into the Audi A3/BMW 1 Series market.

The presser below doesn’t go into too much detail, but it does explain the LF-Ch will have a full hybrid powertrain, including the possibility to drive the car in full electric mode.

I guess we’ll have to wait a few more days before we find out just what the range of the LF-Ch is in electric mode, not to mention the actual performance specs, which Lexus claim will meet the expectations the market demands from a premium hatch.

Given Audi is said to be releasing a 250kW RS3 the performance expectations in the premium hatch segment look set to rise!

LEXUS PRESENTS LF-Ch CONCEPT

  • Concept proposing the first Lexus full hybrid for the premium compact segment;
  • Advanced interior design with asymmetric dashboard and Remote Touch controls;
  • Blacked-out B pillars and concealed rear door handles create the look of a pillarless coupé;
  • L-finesse exterior styling with powerful surfacing and hand-sculpted details;
  • World debut at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show.

Lexus LF-Ch full hybrid concept makes its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show, and is Lexus’s first approach to the competitive premium compact segment.

It reflects the growing demand for cars that are smaller and more fuel and CO2 efficient, but with no compromise in levels of refinement and driving pleasure. By next year the compact segment is expected to claim the largest share of the European premium car market.

LF-Ch concept combines compact dimensions, stylish five-door, full hybrid technology and low emissions to satisfy the most demanding customer requirements and to appeal to a new, younger generation of customers.

Exterior design

LF-Ch concept presents a powerful evolution of Lexus’s L-finesse design philosophy. Rooted in Japanese culture, L-finesse is expressed in every aspect of the car, not only in the visual harmony between the interior and exterior design, but also in the combination of leading-edge engineering and technology with a user-friendly simplicity of function.

The designers focused on the careful juxtaposition of opposing major and minor elements. Intriguing contrasts are created between the powerful, machine-like overall surfacing of the bodywork and the painstaking detail of even the smallest elements, creating a synergy between technologically driven design and a fluid, hand-sculpted quality.

A new, bolder Lexus grille design sits above a deep, full-width bumper and air dam, giving a perfect balance of precision and power. The sharply sculpted, aerodynamic front wings overlap the front bumper to create deep, front brake-cooling air intakes and give LF-Ch a powerful and purposeful wide-track stance.

In profile, the tapered side glazing, a muscular, rising beltline and a sharply truncated rear overhang project the car’s premium compact character. The steeply raked windscreen, long flowing roofline, blacked-out B pillars and rear door handles integrated in the C pillar window trim combine to give the appearance of a sporting pillarless coupe.

At the rear the trailing edge of the roof overhangs the rear window to create an integrated rear spoiler. The tailgate section has a pronounced step, which flows from the muscular wheelarches and is anchored by the wraparound tail lamp design. Aerodynamic detailing of the lower bumper smoothes airflow from beneath the car and feeds ventilation to the rear brakes.

Subtle finishing touches include discreet Lexus hybrid blue badging and sharply tapering chrome mouldings. The harmonious synergy of the design is further expressed in the contrasting, lively yellow exterior finish and calming blue interior illumination.

Interior design

The principles of L-finesse are carried through to the interior where again a powerful simplicity harmonises with hand-crafted quality in the detailing to create a calm, efficient and elegant design.

The cabin features a strongly asymmetric dashboard that is firmly driver-focused with outstanding ergonomics. The driver’s needs are seamlessly anticipated in several surprising elements, for example, when the car is started a greeting is presented on the navigation screen and an ambient lighting pattern appears in the headliner, creating a sophisticated lounge feel.

Extensive use of semi-aniline leather, polished aluminium, wood and soft-touch materials reinforces the theme of harmonious contrast in the dashboard, door panels and seating. The design of the seats is inspired by high quality furniture, with exposed metal frames, lightweight leather and grained black wood used in inter-related layers, shaped to reflect the intrinsic nature of each material used.

The driving position is low and well-supported, with a wide-grip steering wheel with paddle shift controls and an instrument binnacle housing large twin dials embellished with a turbine motif.

To help keep the driver’s focus on the road ahead, distracting instrumentation and switchgear has been kept to a minimum by using Lexus Remote Touch controls, as first seen in new RX 450h. Using a multi-information display on top of the dashboard, Remote Touch works like a computer mouse, letting the driver access control and customise a range of information, entertainment and vehicle set-up programmes.

As with every Lexus, hospitality is at the heart of the ownership experience. To this end, LF-Ch’s comprehensive on-board entertainment package includes iPhone docking for rear seat passengers.

Powertrain and driving performance

Allied to a wide track, long wheelbase and low centre of gravity, LF-Ch’s full hybrid powertrain is engineered to deliver all the performance customers expect from a premium compact hatchback, while at the same time returning low fuel consumption, CO2 and NOx emissions.

With the benefit of the full hybrid technology of Lexus Hybrid drive, the car can be driven in a fully electric EV mode, a power option that is not available to drivers of mild hybrids. This allows for urban driving with minimal noise and zero emissions.

Lexus LF-Ch Concept dimensions

  • Overall length: 4,300
  • Overall width: 1,790
  • Overall height: 1,400
  • Wheelbase: 2,600
  • Tyres (front and rear): 225/35R20
